NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Revitalization Act authorized the NIH to establish the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program in support of biomedical research and training in 1993; Nebraska was designated eligible for this program the same year.

The program's intent is to help participating states develop research and education infrastructures, thus increasing competitiveness of science and engineering researchers and attracting funding to these states. IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) grants promote biomedical research in participating states and encourage students to pursue biomedical research careers. Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grants fund research at independent biomedical research institutes or biomedical research institutions that award doctoral degrees in the health sciences or related sciences to strengthen biomedical research infrastructure through establishment of thematic multi-disciplinary research centers. Collaboration with other non-doctoral degree granting and research-performing institutes or institutions is encouraged within IDeA-eligible states only. Matching funds are not required for these applications, but clear evidence of institutional commitment must be included. INBRE and COBRE grants support outreach, minority, and women's programs in biomedical research. Nebraska has received over $30 million in IdeA funds since 1993.
